Playwright/performer Wallace Shawn has joined the New Group Theater revival of David Rabe's Hurlyburly. He will appear in the show opposite previously announced stars Ethan Hawke, Bobby Cannavale, Josh Hamilton and Catherine Kellner.
The New Group revived Shawn's play Aunt Dan and Lemon last season. As an actor, his off-Broadway credits include The Mandrake, the 1985 Public Theater production of his Aunt Dan and Lemon and The Fever. A veteran of numerous TV and film roles, Shawn currently has a recurring part on Crossing Jordan. He also voices one of the characters in the upcoming Disney/Pixar film The Incredibles, which will be released in the U.S. on November 5.
Set in the cocaine-and-sex-infused Hollywood Hills of the mid-1980s, Hurlyburly is Rabe's brutally comic reflection on the decade of decadence. This production will feature a newly revised script by the playwright and is being touted as the first New York production of the play since its Broadway run in 1984.
The show, directed by Scott Elliott, will begin previews at Theatre Row on January 11 in preparation for a January 27 opening. Its limited engagement is scheduled to run through March 5.
